Friday, January 24, 2014 “Horse in a coat” or Why a horse needs clothes?

“Horse in a coat” is a popular Russian knock-knock joke, which does not make much sense to anybody except attentive horse owners. They are well aware of the importance to have clothes for their horses, which is not an easy subject as it might seem at first glance. Of course some clothes look very cool and stylish but it should provide some necessary functions like protection from allergic reactions during transportations or competitions, or the body heat preservation while winter trainings.

The extra protection for everyday might also be necessary because of some factors. For example, during the regular cleaning of a horse its grease is partially removed along with the dirt which protects the animal from freezing and serves as a water-repellent in the natural environment. Moreover, because of the often shearing, horses do not have rich fur.

That is why modern equestrian shops offer specialized horsecloths. It has a bunch of different lines:
- Night horsecloth.
- Woolen warm up horsecloth which is usually put on over the regular cotton clothes.
- Horsecloth for pasturing and for performances.
- Net-shaped and cotton horsecloth.
- Firm horsecloth for transportation. It is made of air-permeable material, so that the horse will not sweat during long journeys.
- Water-repellent horsecloth which is great to use if the weather is nasty.
- Horsecloth for trainings.

Horsecloth can also include light-reflecting strips to ensure the safety of the horse’s movements while riding close to busy roads.

It is important to pick the model by accurate measurements so it would allow freedom of movement. Measure the space from the middle of the chest to tail and pick a horsecloth corresponding to this size. Pay attention to the buckles on the chest and on girths. They should not be tightly fastened.

It is better to get the horse used to clothes when a colt. Gradually the horse will get accustomed and will not feel discomfort. Visitors of the Equiros-Professional'2014 exhibition will get an opportunity to examine the fashion trends for horses and buy new stylish things.
