On the night of January 16 to 17 in a small Spanish village of San Bartolome de Pinares took place a festive celebration in honor of St Antonius, who is regarded as the patron of animal kingdom, especially horses. The highlight of the festival is the so-called Fire Purification ritual, which features a march of riders through the village and then jumps over roaring fires. It is believed that this rite purifies and protects horses for a whole year. The tradition is almost 500 years old, but recently animal rights activists have become more vocal in putting an end to this practice.
