The Rossiyskiye Ippodromy is ready to accommodate repositioned horses in Tambov, Voronezh, Kursk and Oryol.
Tenants of the Central Moscow Hippodrome stables complain that relocation for such a long period of time can lead to the reduction in the number of trotters and even "destroy the industry". The hippodrome, which has been operating since 1834, is planned to close for three years. But the races might resume in just a year and a half.
The state-owned company Rossippodromy has started the preparation phase of reconstruction of the largest and oldest Russian hippodrome. It plans to repair tracks and stalls, restore the historical building and build VIP stands. It is reported that the total cost of the work might exceed 12 billion rubles.
The main building was built in 1889-1894 by architects I. Baryutin and S. Kulagin. It was rebuilt in the 1950s in the style of Stalinist and Palladian architecture. In 2004, the Government of the Russian capital recognized the building as a cultural monument of regional value.
Depending on the season, 850-1,000 horses are housed in the stables of the Hippodrome. The Central Moscow Hippodrome is one of the few working racetracks in the world that combines both harness racing and horse racing, and also serves as a training center.
